Yimminy, that Was Some Doormat Bowl, Eh?

The Doormat draft starts tonight, so let's wrap the sandwich from last year.

After watching a classic debacle in Doormat Bowl 2015 in frigid Minneapolis, Minnesota--Tampa Bay edged Tennessee to take the loss--this reporter stumbled into the nearest warm place that served Spanish Coffees on Sunday. That's where I met some guy named Guy who said he was looking for a missing woman by the name of Sven. "Isn't that a guy name?" I asked Guy. "Have ya looked at yer watch lately?" he answered. "It's 2015, Mack. Nowadays, any stiff gets any name they want, any gender they want, and they can use any bathroom they want, eh?"

I watched as the bartender swirled flaming rum around the sugar coated edge of the Spanish Coffee glass. "So, Sven is a girl who is a guy?"

Guy snorted his shot of whiskey. "Nah."

"Sven is a guy who is a girl?"

"Nah."

"So what is Sven?"

"Sven is a missing woman and I'm lookin' for her, OK?"

"Did you try the bathroom?"

"Oh, yer a wise guy, eh?"

The bartender slid the drink to me, hot and potent. I took a swig and scalded my lips.

"Jeez, buddy," she said. "That's molten sugar there, take it easy, eh?"

"Yah, yah," Guy added. "C'mon, let's go." He plunked two ice cubes in my drink and slugged it down, wiped his lips, and ushered me out into the frozen Minneapolis night. My pants felt like stove pipes as I walked.

That's when a Viking woman dressed in a leather tunic with a broadsword at her hip stepped from behind an old El Camino. Guy seemed unfazed, so I guessed this was a common occurrence in Minneapolis.

"I am Ingrid. You look for Sven?" she said. We both nodded yes. "I take you to Sven."

She picked us up and tossed us in the back of the El Camino. "Hold tight." She said.

Frozen and shivering, we arrived 30 minutes later at a dark warehouse along the Mississippi river. It's strange to think Minnesotans with nordic accents live along the Mississippi. What was even stranger was the scene inside the warehouse. A gigantic above-ground pool was in the center with two small Viking ships bobbing around, one with a crew of 11, the other with just 8. Around the pool were bleachers packed with men and women drinking ale from cow horns and screaming. They rocked back and forth to the sound of great skin drums, like tall corn in a stiff, swirling wind.

Ingrid hoisted a horn of ale, quaffed it, wiped her face with the back of her sleeve, and then pointed to one of the ships. "Sven," she said, and signaled us to follow her.

As we toddled along behind the striding woman, I mumbled to Guy, "So, why are you looking for Sven?"

"I didn't say," he answered.

"Well, you found Sven, so she isn't missing anymore."

"We gotta get her home, kid."

We came up to the edge of the pool, Ingrid drew her sword and banged the side of one of the ships. "Sven!" she bellowed. A sturdy, wide, person who looked a lot like Ernest Borgnine looked down from the ship. "Ingrid!" she shouted. "You made it!"

Ingrid waved us to follow and we all three came aboard. Sven handed me and Guy each a horn of ale. "Drink," she said.

I turned to Guy. "I don't think this is going to be my cup of tea."

"Yah, eh? You are getting it in barrels, kid," he answered.

We drank. Ingrid slapped us both on the back. "We get you gear," she said. "Now we are 11."

At that moment the crowd exploded into roars of anticipation. Drums beat again, and crews slowly turned the ships to the center of the pool. Sven climbed half way up the mast and addressed the crew. "No quarter!" she cried. "It's victory or Valhalla for us now!"

The ships picked up speed as we were handed helmets and swords. I peered through the lights in the stands. Did I see TV cameras? Was this ESPN?

Too late to answer that one. The ships collided at mid-pool, we were thrown forward and the crowd roared louder than Seahawks fans at a 49ers game. Berserk Vikings, men and women, surged over the railing of our ship, swinging axes and swords. I noticed Ingrid seemed to be handy with hers, so I got in behind her and followed her lead. A hulking, horned-helmet moose of a man knocked her back and came straight for me. I fell on my back and waved my arms like a beetle. "I don't want to die!" I screamed. The man paused, bewildered by my response, which gave Ingrid time to hack him down. "Good ruse," she said to me. "You are smart, and brave."

Well, at least I was alive. I stayed close to Ingrid the rest of the battle, chopping at anyone who came at her from behind, and finding lots of opportunities to beg for mercy, and I somehow survived it, Guy too. Our team was ultimately victorious, and the stomping crowd chanted their approval.

"Where is this place?" I asked Guy. "It's Minneapolis, kid," he answered, finishing off a horn of ale. "Every day."

Now, you might think that is the end of the story. But it is not; though I have run out of time to tell it. I will conclude with a quick summary. Guy had found Sven, and got her and his client connected again. Not sure why anyone wanted to be connected to Sven, but she was a winner, I guess. Ingrid said to me, "You come home with Ingrid." I enthusiastically said yes, expecting a hero's reward. What I did not know was that Ingrid lived in Russia. I protested at first, but I got the reward right away, and there was definitely the likelihood of a lot more, so I decided, what the heck, let's go to Russia.

We spent one glorious year in Norilsk, Russia, the furthest north city in the country. It was below zero almost all of the time, so we had to stay home, drink mead, and keep warm; which was fine with me.

Then I heard that Doormat Bowl 2016 was to be played in St. Petersburg, Russia. Ingrid had never seen a real American football game and wanted to go. I told her she still would not be seeing a real American football game, but it would be in the neighborhood of one. So we took the Trans Siberian Railroad to St. Petes, and enjoyed a true stinker of a game between the Doormat champions of 2015/16 season, Dallas and Tennessee. This was Tennessee's second consecutive appearance in the Doormat Bowl. They accidentally won in the last seconds of that game, failing to lose to the impossible to lose to Tampa Bay Bootineers.

There were over 500 rowdy Russians at this game, which was played Feb. 20 on an old soccer field with the temperature hovering around 2 degree Fahrenheit. Tennessee got off to a rocky start, scoring a field goal in the first and second quarters, taking a 6-0 lead into the 4th quarter. Finally, Mariotta engineered and excellent negative drive and, on his own 5 yard line, he tossed an interception and Dallas had the ball on the 23. Three plays later it was Dallas on the 29, but still in field goal range. Tennessee then pulled a trick play and deflected the field goal, recovered it on the 4, took a hit at the 5, fumbled it into the end zone, and Dallas fell on it for a TD. It was 6-6. Dallas expertly missed the field goal and the game went into triple overtime.

Finally, Dallas was forced to kick a field goal, handing a well-deserved loss to Tennessee, 9-6. Tennessee had prevailed in one of the worst games ever played (there was a total of 148 yrds of offense in the game and 8 punts, 8 turnovers, and 200 yards in penalties. Not to mention three shanked punts).

And that was Doormat Bowl 2016.

Looking forward to a great 2016/17 season in the basement!

Doormat Week 13: RAIDERS TAKE CHARGE!!

MAKE WAY FOR THE KING

RAIDERS 0,  RAMS 52
Leaving no doubt about who is the worst team in the league, in perhaps the most phenomenal defeat in their history (the 1961 55-0 loss to Houston included), the Oakland Raiders played the worst game I've ever seen a pro football team play.  In a complete implosion after their lone victory 10 days ago, the Silver and Blacked Out pulled out all the stops:  5 turnovers. Linebackers falling for fakes that don't work in Little Guy football. QBs running for their lives. Running plays to nowhere. The dinkiest dink passes known to human-kind. A barrage of 3-and-outs in the first half.  Four 3rd-and-1 play calls- sideline pass plays- that had no chance of converting into a first down. 3 of those the first 3 possessions.  For all the world it looked intentional. When you have the biggest moose at fullback in the entire league, Marcel Reese, and you do not run him on 3rd and a yard, there is really something systemically planned going on. Add to this a hysterical chaos that is sometimes called a defensive backfield on other football teams, and you get a hail of touchdowns racked up so fast, the Rams had their biggest lead of the season (14-0) for only about 2 minutes before it got doubled.  The Raiders didn't play defense- they held a charity event.  The Raider 'D' took more bad angles than the drunks down at my local billiard hall.

And just when the avalanche seemed to have stopped, the Blacked Out pulled out forgotten big off-season pick-up Matt Schaub at QB, threw him into the fray, and Matt delivered the cherry-on-top pick-six in the 4th quarter, getting the Rams over the half-century mark.  Pop the champagne!

Raiders coach Tony Sporano said the Blacked Out weren't sharp all week. Not sharp? Coach, coach, COACH.  That was the greatest Doormat performance possible. Sporting the worst Turkey Day hangover of all time must be recognized, but this kind of bad takes at least 2, maybe 3 years of prep, and the Raiders have made it.  Once they got ol' tiresome Al out of the way, and his boob of a son Mark got ahold of the team, it's been a hard charge into the biggest sinkhole in the history of Commitment to Excellence.

The Raiders, the worst team in football for the last 11 years, are now the Worst Team in Football RIGHT NOW.  Mission Accomplished.

Let's have a look at the standings, and then let's skewer the other games:

THE STANDINGS

DOORMAT DIVISION , WEEK 13

THE REST OF THE SORRY PILE

GIANTS 24, JAGUARS 25
In this huge Doormat tilt, staked to a 21-0 lead by the Jaguars, the New York Gnats turn it around with TWO fumbles- one in their end zone and the other run back 41 yards- for Jaguar touchdowns, thus saving the Jags the bother of having to move the football, which is usually not on the clipboard.  The Giants make sure they don't get the last field goal, they hit 7 straight losses, lose to the #2 team in the Doormat, and keep within a game of Tampa Bay in the NFC.  Pow!

BUCS 13,  BENGALS 14
Bengals QB Andy Dalton really really tried, but 3 interceptions will not do it against the Bootineers, not when first place is there for the taking, and 10 losses are on the line. Faced with a first and goal after an interception, and the lead 7 yards away, the Boots refuse to move into the end zone, kick a field goal, and come up 1 point short.  Arr!  The Boots walk their own plank.

DEADSKINS 27, COLTS 49
This was like a college game, where the really bad team somehow stays with the much better team until early in the 3rd quarter, and then they just can't keep up.  The Sunburns run out of gas, hit the gatorade table, and come up with the big loss.  Only one game out of first in the Doormat NFC.

TITANS 21,  ASTROS 45
I mean, the TEXANS.  If you can make Texan QB Ryan Fitzpatrick wind up with a 147.5 rating, you are really really...really scraping the bottom of the tallow bin, baby.  Titanics get Houston out to a 24-0 lead, bring in once-upon-a-time franchise QB Jake Locker, and Jake whips out two INTs and a fumble.
Titanics make it to 10 losses as well.  Glub!

FALCONS 29, CARDINALS 18
The Falcons accidentally got out to a 17-0 lead, had no idea how to respond, and couldn't get back on track.  Cardinal QB Drew Stanton finished being an effective stand-in QB 3 weeks ago, and the Falcons had no response.  Holy Cow, Atlanta won a game.  SCREEECH!

PANTHERS 13, VIKINGS 31
Finally, the Minnesota Vikes played a cold weather game in Minneapolis for the first time since Martin Van Buren was president. And guess what?  They won!  Today's only palindrome score, the Vikings get whacked with TWO easy punt blocks, which they run in for scores, and they cannot recover.  Getting ahead of the Pansies 21-3 is murder.  You're not going to lose.  Cam Newton has you right where he wants you.

The Doormat Division: NFL WEEK 4 Wrap-Up and Disposal!

The Doormat Division:  NFL Week 4 Wrap-Up and Disposal

The Doormat Division is about who is doing the worst, and doing it best.
It was an incredible weekend for racking up the stats in the Doormat, and I don’t see why we shouldn’t tack them up right now:

NFL Week 4 Worst Stats!!!!!

Turnovers: 6                 Bills, Chiefs
Interceptions:  4            Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bills  (season total 7, tied for lead)
Fumbles lost: 3            Jets, Chiefs
Points:  0                      Jets
First downs:  9              Jets             (noticing a trend?)
Total yards: 145            Jets   (Biplanes? Cropdusters?)
Pass yards: 100            Jets, Vikings
Rush yards: 28            Cardinals  (Jets 45)
Most yards and still lost: 438            Bills (Panthers 426)
Out-gain the other team and still lose:     +114  Lions  (Saints and Panthers do it too)
3rd down conversion:  1-12     Raydurzz
Sacked:  8        Cardinals (and they WON)
Punts:  9           Cardinals (and they WON)
Total interceptions: 26
Total lost fumbles: 20  that’s a LOT.  It’s usually about 10.
Penalties: 10-107      Buccaneers  (Ravens got 11, but only 100 yards)
Time of poss: 22:35            Raydurzz

THE DOORMAT STANDINGS:
 Won-lost and point differential

AFC

Cleveland     0-4   -25
Tennessee     1-3   -70
Oakland        1-3   -58
Kansas City  1-3   -48
Jacksonville  1-3   -35

NFC

AINTS         0-4    -20
Carolina       1-3    -29
Detroit          1-3   -14
Tampa Bay   1-3   -9
St. Louis       2-2   -12

BACK ON TOP!!

AINTS  27, PACKERS 28
We knew they would struggle, but who—eeeeee!!!  The Aints sit alone atop the NFC Doormat standings at a mighty 0-4,  after a wild finish where Saints kicker Garrett Hartley kicks a go-ahead 43-yard FG with 2:49 left, but WAIT- there’s a Saints penalty, so it’s a 53 yarder now, but wait the Packers are offside, so it’s a 48-yarder now.  After all that, the only thing to do is just miss the stupid uprights and lose.  Done.  Next galling loss: Chargers.  The AINTS are smokin’ hot.  I’ve never seen a team score so many points and lose.

 UGLY LOSS OF THE WEEKEND

This is a tough one.   How about the Bills, who, leading 21-7 early in the 3rd,  turn on the turnover machine and cough it up SIX TIMES and get run over in a runaway loss 52-28 to the Pats?  At Home? A Come From Ahead Loss that turns into a Blowout? Ryan Fitzpatrick, not about to let some rookie in an orange helmet with no logo steal his interception crown, cashes in 4 killer INTs and ties Brandon Weeden for the league lead at 7.  Toss in a couple fumbles and what an ugly loss.  Go get ‘em Nils!

Or this one-

VIKINGS 20, LIONS 13
The Yikings don’t score a TD on offense.  The Kittens special teams start digging a freeway in the Kat Box, and the Yikes run back a punt and a kickoff for 2 TDs. Peeeeuw! Kittens can’t light the wet fuse that is their late game heroics (which aren’t winning games anyway) and bring back the memories for the faithful in Detroit.  Where’s my Matt Millen cut-out?
In the last 4 seasons, plus up to Week 4 this year, the Kittens have beaten teams with winning records exactly TWICE.  And the last one was TWO YEARS AGO against the Packers.  Rowr!  Ffft!!

Or THIS ONE:

CARDINALS 24,  DOLPHINS 21
The Floppers, leading 21-14, with 5:00 left in the game, turn to rookie QB Ryan Tannehill to pull out the loss-  putting one on the rug that the Cardinals snag and then drive to tie the game with and send this baby into overtime.  Tannehill then wisely plays the INT card in OT and the Cruds have no option but to line up the kick and scrape one over the uprights for the win.  Despite getting sacked 8 times, throwing two INTs, getting 28 yards rushing and amassing 435 yards on 9 punts, the Crudinals cannot catch a break and keep on winning.  They’re 4-0 for crying out loud.  We’ve still got their bobblehead on the bar in the Basement!   The Flops live on in Doormat lore.

THE REST OF THE SORRY PILE

RAMS 19, SEAHAWKS 13
The Lambs get out-coached again by Pete Carroll, and the Seahags remind us that they aren’t out of the basement yet by losing to the worst NFC team of the past decade.

TEXANS 38, TITANS 14
Titanics get blown out in a solid loss.  Tennessee stays in the Doormat race at 1-3.

BENGALS 27, JACKSONVILLE 10
Flying under the radar this week, the Gaguars just put in the time and get the loss.  Nothing fancy.  Just straight-up professional losing.

FALCONS 30, PANTHERS 28
Yet another loss snatched from the jaws of victory, the Panthers pull off a classic, pinning the opponent at the 1 with a minute to go…and losing the ballgame.  The Panthers really need to play the AINTS and decide who can rack up the most yards and points and STILL lo- Oh, wait, they already beat the AINTS for their only victory.  The AINTS rule the roost!

CHARGERS 37, CHIEFS 20
Whenever you hear me saying the Cheaps should win a game, don’t believe it.  Deep down I don’t believe they should win a single game, and boy did they do it up at Arrow-thru-the-Head Stadium yesterday.  Don’t let that score fool you.  It might as well have been 222-0.  SIX turnovers and a world of hurt for the football fanatics that had to watch that bombshell of a detonated football game.  The Cheaps still have Oakland on the schedule-twice, the Dolts and the Brownies.  It will be tough, but don’t count them out yet in the tough AFC Doormat.   Next Loss: Baltimore.

aaaAAAAAAAND That’s The View from the BASEMENT!!!!

Cellar Divsion WEAK XV Wrap-Up and Disposal

Cellar Division Weak XV Wrap-Up and Disposal

Ok it’s Christmas Week and I barely have time to go to the bathroom, so

I’m going to try to keep it brief.

BREAK UP THE BROWNIES!!

Brownies 41 Cheaps 34

We shoulda known. You get two teams with defenses that play the Bend-but-don’t-stop-anything format and this is what you should expect. 3 out of the last 4 weeks the Brownies give the NFL the most fun game to watch. WTF!?!

But let’s not get carried away by Joshua Cribbs and Jerome Harrison. We’re not footballs. This is the CELLAR, and the team that gets the credit here is the CHEAPS. Each team fought hard to lose this one, constantly allowing ridiculous amounts of yards to players nobody’s ever heard of (OK we’ve heard of Cribbs in the last 3 weeks), and letting the points rack up. Jim Brown was in the house and I bet he was thinking he could have gone for 400 yards against that defense. It was two prize fight stooges trying to throw the game at every opportunity, and the WORST team won…lost. The Cheaps move into first in the AFC Cellar, something I did not think was going to happen this season. I was sure the Brownies had the culture of losing nailed, and were taking it to the house.

Ha! Watch those two kick-off return TDs by Cribbs- but watch the ‘tackling.’ Wow! Can a team really tackle that wimpy? I think the Cheapettes, or whatever their cheerleaders are called, could have gotten that guy on the ground faster. They could get me on the ground very fast, I’m sure.

LOSER OF THE WEEK

The Cheaps, man. I don’t care if they piled up 491 yards. This was hard work losing this game against a team clearly matching them dumbass defensive play after another.

These guys knuckled down and let the Brownies pull it out in the W column when it looked like they just couldn’t give up any more yards. Way to go guys!!

(runner-up in loser of the week: Chicago CareBears losing 31-7 to the Ravens)

BLOWOUT OF THE WEAK

Deadskins 12, NYG 479

OK OK it was only 45, but after Jason Campbell tossed the worst screen pass in history to Giant DB Thomas at the 14 and he ran it in for a TD to make it 38-6, you could see coach Jim Zorn cleaning out his desk, mentally, as he stood, like a lonely figure slowly twisting in the wind, imperceptibly mumbling into his headset on the Deadskin sideline. Campbell pretty much looked like he was done in D.C. too. What with new GM Bruce Allen (son of George) pacing in the luxury box upstairs, I think he was warming up the ejector button like crazy. Better get some oil on that, Bruce, you’re going to be really busy really soon.

STIFF OF THE WEEK

Altanta-Jets game sported 15 punts, but more importantly:

Lambs 13 Texans 16

Still have a guy named Null at QB. It’s perfect, except they have one win. Lambs are taking it to the house. Cardinals next week, followed by 49ers (uh-oh Danger of Victory Index goes up slightly). Lambs are nailing down WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE. The Lambs stand a-LONE at the top of the Cellar! No matter how bad the other team plays, engaging in a field goal fest, the Lambs can do whatever it takes. Keeping Stephen Jackson under 100 yards being their big focus.

Biggest Deflating Moment (or Flop of the Week, in honor of the Floppers)

Kittens 24, Cardinals 31: Kittens come from 17 down, tie it with 4 minutes left, and then just hand it to Warner and the Cards in the final 2 minutes. In Detroit. Merry Christmas.

But, of course, in Cellar terms, waaaaaaay to go, men! How about a little more rum in your eggnog?

SHOCKER OF THE WEEK

Bootineers beating the Seahags is shocking, but I predicted it, so I’m not shocked.

Raydurz beating the Broncos is VERY Shocking, what with Ja-miss-it winning the game, but you can’t top this:

Pansies 26 Vikings 7

This was shaping up as the stiff of the week, frankly, a Puntfest (15!) and completely crap game from the Vikings offense, and then the defense got tired of the whole thing and just collapsed in the 4th quarter. Pansies take advantage because Jake Delhomme is not under rump. Honestly, Pansies played great defense, just crushed the Vikes (I watched this one) and it makes you wonder about the purple and gold for the post season, if they can turn in such a stinker in week XV. Back when they wore satiny purple pants and Fran Tarkenton was running up, back, side to side and Jim Marshall was just running the wrong way, they were my favorite team. With Favre back there, for some reason I just want to see a sackfest for the other team. And I got one last night.

LOW END TOTALS FOR WEEK XV

Points: 7 Vikings, Jets, Carebears

First downs: 10 Vikings (Yikes!)

Total yds: 237 Vikes (Yikes!) and Lambs, tie.

Passing: 66 Brownies (Brady Quinn, in victory, still plays like kee-rap)

Rushing: 41 Vikes (Yikes and away!)

Turnovers: 5 Seahags (4 int, 1 fumble)

Penalties: 10 for 84 yds. Steelers

Time of Poss: 22:01 VIKINGS (boy did they play a lousy game.)

aaaaaaaAAAAAAND that’s the view from the BASEMENT!!!
