DOORMAT VICTORY!

Denver Broncos 29, Pittsburgh Steelers 23

They may have ended up 8-8, but we still consider them part of the family. And, like last year's Doormat Playoff representative, the Seahags, the Denver Bunco-Donky-Bunks do it again!!
The heavily favored Steelers have to travel to the division winner of the worst division in the NFL (that's not REALLY true, but the records are the worst), and get knocked off by a team that people keep insisting is really terrible.

I'm not going to go all Tebowing on you guys, because these are the guys that ruined my chance at the Moldy Carpet Fantasy League trophy, but that was one of the more unusual paths to victory I've seen in a while.

Give coach John Fox credit for coming up with a crafty game plan- the Pittsburgh defense was totally deked about 10 times. When you have receivers AVERAGING 50 yards per reception, somebody is getting faked out of their jockstrap. An entire defense is out of position. I've never seen a team more convinced, like the Steelers were, that the Broncos weren't really going to pass the ball. I have never seen a team overload the line that much, or more eager to commit to a run than today's Steeler defense. Guys- it's just a QB that runs an option. Play a little more conventional defense. Oops!

Sure, the Steelers were banged up. So? What a gameplan- run it, unless you throw the bomb. Those short over the middle passes going for huge gains though....Steeler meltdown.

see you next week for a rumpus in New England.

  1. You nailed it. Steelers looked for the same game plan from the Broncos from bell to bell. WTH? They are a better team than that. The last TD in OT they were completely jocked out.

I'm mad at the Broncos, though. They were supposed to play like a doormat and let us all down. Then again, it's fun when one of our doormats...as long as it's not the Seahags...clocks one of the big dogs.

But now they face the Pats. Might be time for the swan song....

    Go Dinky Donk BInky Boncs.

  2. I think if you can't trust your linebackers to pursue the option, and you commit two DBs on every play to the line, and you give Tebow the easiest read possible (all man-to-man, no double teaming), you get the result.
Of course, Steelers were seriously banged up. But that's football, baby!!

  3. So, The Pats run their base defense and try to stop the run? Don't The Pats suck on defense? I think the Bunks have a chance if they can run the ball and hold The Pats score down. If the Bunks score 24, I think they could win this thing. I can't believe I just said that!

  4. yep Pats have mediocre D. Since I spend all my time studying the CRUMMY teams, I have little idea just how bad their D is. If they have suspect LBs, I think they are in trouble. They need to disrupt the option right up front. I will not count the Buncos out of any game. If Tebow is off his game, which he can be in spades, then boom. Like you said, Allmighty, if he's confident for real, he's pretty damn fun to watch.

  5. And don't forget, the Broncos can turn in a stellar defensive game.

  6. No team with a defense rated below fifth has ever won the Superbowl. Therd is alwsys a first time, but it is true that offense wins the season and defense wins the playoffs. Don't be shocked if it comes down to Ravens and Niners or even Buncs and Giants.

  7. oooh, hard historical DATA. So, what's the WORST defense that ever won it?

  8. 06 Colts worst defense ever to win Super Bowl (8th in NFL) Num. two is 83 Raiders ( Plunkett).

  9. Only one QB who won a Super Bowl had higher passer rating in playoffs than Plunkrtt...Joe Montana. And Plunkett is not in the hall of fame.

  10. Wasn't The Lambs defense pretty bad when they won? I can't believe they were fifth or better. Hey, speaking of defense, the Lambkins might be getting Jeff Fisher for head coach. I really like Jeff Fisher. He used to sponsor Colton's Pop Warner big golf fundraiser every year for several years. His sister was on the board. He brought Marcus Allen one year. I just about died when I saw him there. I even got an autograph.

  11. I actually saw an article on that on ESPN once. Contrary to popular belief, the Warner era Rams had a solid defense. Overshadowed by an offense that scored at will, but good, ranked in the top 10 I believe.

  12. I meant over time. The year they won were in top five.

  13. Well, those doofi on ESPN must have had it wrong cause they said no team rated below 5th in defense ever won the bowl but the worst ever was the 06 Colts who were ranked 8th. I did some digging, and it turns out they had it wrong. No team ranked in the bottom five of their Conference have ever won the Super Bowl. In addition, no team ranked below 8th (Colts obviously) in the NFL ever won a Super Bowl.

This year, amazingly, NE and GB are ranked 31 and 32 for total defense. Worst two teams in the NFL. The only teams still in the playoffs ranked in the top ten are Baltimore and San Francisco. If you are going to go with the numbers, they look pretty good right now.

  14. a 49ers-Ravens rematch- aaaaaaaa!!!!! seeing how the last one came out, but maybe the Niners learned something. they just crushed us. It was brutal.
I'm telling you, you just can't trust people for WORST stats around here. We have to do it all ourselves. But I do agree that NE and GB probably won't make it, NO has better D than GB. Problem is SF offense is really pretty terrible. We're near the bottom in passing. We don't turn it over, that's our only saving grace.

  15. That Ravens/Niners Bowl sucked. It was like Bama and LSU, the lousiest college championship gamd to date.

  16. Ravens-Niners Bowl?? No, I mean just mean this year's game. Ravens didn't play the Niners in Super Bowl. Thank God, we would have gotten killed.

YES the SEC Championship Bowl, oh excuse me the BCS Bowl, was a humongous stiff.

  17. DOH, I was thinking 2001 Ravens 34 Giants 7 Snore Bowl. Ravens defense stuffed them all game long. It was ugly and brutal and by the end of the game you really felt sorry for the Giants. Here's the Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXV

  18. As for 99 Rams (beat Titans in Super Bowl) here are their numbers:

    1999 Super Bowl Champions
    Season Overall Ratings

Scored 526 points (32.9/g), 1st of 31 in the NFL.
    Allowed 242 points (15.1/g), 4th.
    Differential of 284 points (17.8/g), 1st.

So there you have it. Man, that was a great Super Bowl.
