Looking innocently like the loyal side-kick, today Wade Phillips finally takes over the job finishing the run to the Mold Carpet.
Sailing brilliantly to a Doormat Championship, the Houston Toxins (2-11) have taken the a very risky step of firing the head coach with 3 games to go. Teams often win a game after that happens. Geez. With Tampa, Atlanta, and Washington all breathing down their necks, they can't afford to slip up now.
But who really is the mastermind behind the 11 game losing streak? Was Coach Kubiak's mini-stroke really an accident? Wade Phillips' long career of losing in playoffs 1-5 won't help him here. Hey, he's the LAST coach to take the Bills to the playoffs, back in the Baroque era. It's the playoffs where he blows it, not the regular season.
Any team that can rack up 14 penalties for 177 yards (highest of 2013) against one of the worst teams in the league is really really working it, and Coach Wade has his defense bumbling its way to a championship. Now he has the whole team, and it's up to him to bring it home.
Only time will tell if the Houston suits know what they are doing, or if they've just made the biggest blunder of the 2013 season.

It to happen. Great photo. The cloud may dissipate for a week and Texans get a W. Failcons vs Toxins will be the Swan Dive Bowl this year.
ReplyDeleteWade Philips (Bum's son) has an interesting history. replaced dan reeves as head coach 2x. (1993 in Denver and 2003 in Atlanta). 1-5 in playoff games. replaced as head coach by Jim Mora in 1985 and then by Jim Mora Jr. in 2003. He has generally brought good teams that he inherited, down within 3 years. Infamously inserted Brad Johnson into starting lineup of wildcard playoff game after Doug flutie had won 11 of 15 games that season. this wildcard game is also known as the Music city Miracle....Also oddly Wade is known as a defensive mastermind... at least until the toxic cloud confirms his demise
ReplyDeleteWell, the D has been great in Houston for the last couple years. This year, they haven't gotten the turnovers. They are -14 in give/take, and though Schaub has been horrific, often turning it over deep in his own territory, the D has only 5 INTs. They've lost 8 games by a TD or less, so turn around the INTs and maybe they're 8-8. But, they find a way to lose, and what ifs don't count around here.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to put the Kittens back up. They imploded again. T_T
ReplyDeletenever should have taken them down! Not until they reach 8 wins.
ReplyDeleteNow we wait and see if they can get under .500
