Niners Obliterate Cardinals in Spectacular Loss

SAN FRANCISCO 21, ARIZONA 33

In a classic Thursday Night Doormat battle between two 1-3 NFC Worst teams, the San Francisco Forty-Whiners out-terribled the Arizona Crudinals in a display of dysfunction that may be nearing perfection.  It was stunning.

Unfortunately, in the Basement, when teams achieve this perfection, they do insane things like change quarterbacks.  Hence, today's picture.

BUT, last night, the Niners started out with the black unis, hoping, perhaps, that no one would see or recognize them, and snagged the loss and now have a 1-4 record that looks like 2-14 to us. In between, it was first a hail of punts, hilariously overthrown- and I mean comic- balls right down the middle over the helpless wide open receiver who had nothing between themselves and paydirt, dink 3rd down passes that have no chance, then taunting penalties (after a measly first down), dropped wide open passes, 7 sacks, 3 turnovers, and just wow.  And I mean WOW, Doormat fans.

The Crudinals, who are not so bad at this Doormat style themselves, sporting back-up QB Drew Stanton, held their own in the first quarter, punting with a vengeance (9 for the game), and even giving the Niners the first touchdown.  Sort of 'spotting' it, you might say.  But then, a quick interception from 49er QB Plain Gabbert, and a 1 play drive got the Cards their first TD.

After that, it was just a matter of time. The Cards couldn't keep up with the team that never has gains over 20 yards (last in the league), runs an offense that looks strangely like some college ball scheme designed to take advantage of out-of-shape and not well coached kids (instead of teams of professionals), and has a crowd so sparse (Oakland A's sparse...Tampa Bay Devil Rays sparse) that the boo birds can't even get a wail up above the level of  "plaintive bleating."  Pour me another bowl of Cheese Balls, guys, it's ART.  It's soap opera, at least.

Now, when you really want to win the Moldy Carpet, it's all about how you come out in the second half- and what can you say to muffing the 2nd half kickoff, stopping the Cards at the 15 but then run into the kicker on the 4th down FG attempt, give the Cruds a first down, and then give up the touchdown on the next play?  Pack up the tuna sandwiches, honey, it's time to go home.  Oh, wait, that's an empty seat I'm talking to.

It was all perfect. Now, the Whiners really don't have much in the way of options, so that's the plus in the Moldy Carpet drive. They have no stars, except one with a big afro on the bench, can't really execute the offense, and the defense, though clearly not buying into the Doormat philosophy completely, still gave up 33 points on a night when they were playing hard.

p.s.  We were baffled by the announcers giving Gabbert a vote of confidence (he's only lost everywhere he goes, and it's not the system, OK? Just WATCH) and a kind of school-marm admonishment to the critics, while also putting forward the usual baloney about why Kaepernick is not the right choice. It sounded like paid announcements, and, worse, a veiled cover for dislike that has been hurled Kaepernick's direction since he started taking a knee. Jesus Mary Joseph the WHOLE TEAM is taking a knee in the department of competitiveness, and if they want to have any chance of winning a game, they need to put that guy out there.  He can at least throw an accurate ball down the middle.

WEEK EIGHT WRAP-UP and LOWER INTO THE THAMES!!

Back On Top Like they Never Left!

The Basement is full of mangy, torn-up, tattered cats today, as the Detroit Felines have unchallenged supremacy of the Doormat.  We can't do anything about this, except put out bowls of Kitty Krak Kibble, and wait for a challenger to unseat them.  Fat chance!
Elsewhere, the San Diego Cringers (I'm searching for a name here) are suddenly contenders, the Titanics look unstoppable, and the 49ers may be Detroit's only obstacle to Moldy Carpet Glory.

Kitty Krak Kibble, and I don't care, Kitty Krak Kibble and I don't care....

THE GAMES

Blowouts of the Week

LIONS 10, CHIEFS 45
The Kitten defense turns back the clock in London for Chiefs QB Alex Smith, WAY MORE THAN AN HOUR, and I could've sworn it was Utah blowing out Wyoming in 2004.  The dude rushed for 78 yards, and probably could've gotten 50 more. He looked fast. Somebody is SLOW.  The team that can't score in the Red Zone had NO problem against the Kitties.  On the other side of the stench, the Lions offensive line lies down like 11 fat cats stretched out in a sunbeam on the carpet at that cat lady's house down the street and QB Matt "Punching Bag" Stafford hits the "dirt" 6 more times- he's well on his way to never being the same again.  Lions only real threat here are the Forty-Whiners, who, by God, are right on the Kittens fuzzy little tails.

NINERS 6,  RAMS 27
How you call this a blowout and yet have 18 punts, I'm not sure, but any game with the Niners is a blowout, even if the score is 14-3.  I'm sure the Rams were aiming to pitch a shutout here, so they're probably chewing each other out today in the meeting room.  How the Niners even get a field goal these days is beyond me (ed: they are burdened with a great kicker).  This team is a serious challenge to the beloved Lions.  11 first downs! 189 total yards! 10 punts!  3-17 on third down.  How do you even DO that?  It helps that the Rams punted 8 times themselves, so the Whiners got plenty of opportunity to display just how hapless, and how hard they've worked on this, they are.  Gold Stars all around for the Bumblers by the Bay.

CAN YOU FEEL IT BUILDING??

KITTENS vs. WHINERS

DEC. 27TH AT THE KAT BOXX!!!!

Be there.  Or be someplace else.

CLOSE SHAVING!!

Four games were decided at the last second yesterday, the Doormat was there for most of it-

BEARS 20, VIKINGS 23
What do you do when you are up by 10 points, at home, with 4:55 left in the game?  You find a way.  As they say in Detroit "there's still time to lose."  And daBares direct some superb Prevent-the-win defense, given up an immediate 40-yard touchdown, go 3-and-out, give up another long pass, and cap it with a 36-yard field goal from the Vikes with 00:00 on the clock. Even the Lions beat this team.  You know?  Good luck losing to daBares.  2-5 and headed for 10 losses, NO PROBLEM.

CHARGERS 26, RAVENS 29  (OT)
Lose big, lose small, what's the difference?  After getting blown out by Oakland last week, the Bolts (Blots?) lose this one in overtime to the team that loves to lose the close ones. Shrugging off the chance to beat a team looking for a loss, the Chargettes (Cringers? help me out, here) are now 2-6 and in the thick of the AFC race.  They were 2-2 at one point and looking dangerous.  They're dangerous all right- to themselves.  Flame On!! FLAME OUT!!!

BUCS 23, FALCONS 20 (OT)
Don't look now- well, maybe you should- the Bootineers are 3-4 and clearly toying with Parity Division status.  Winning on a field goal in OT- but not the last play of the game- the Bucs tried mightily to blow another big lead (17), but the Falcons were just too much, with 4 turnovers and 11 penalties for 124 yards.  Kill that offense.  Kill it.

BROWNS 20,  CARDINALS 34
The Blank Helmets were up 20-7 in the first half, with the Cardinals fumble onslaught (3 of them) placing the Brownies in a difficult scenario- a big lead. But that's what first halves are for- false hope. And that's good enough for Cleveland!  Half-time! Everybody go home! Do not turn on your radios.
Do not look at your smartphone.  It'll spoil your drive home.

TITANS 6, TEXANS 20
Let's face it.  If you can't keep your point total under 6, you won't lose to the Titanics.  Titanics Coach Ken "Whiz-bang" Whisenhunt still has his job.  Coincidence, or Moldy Carpet PLOT?

COWBOYS 12, SEAHAGS 13
The Seahags may be struggling, but the Cowboys have your number.  QB Matt Cassel is in charge- 'nuff said.  5 straight losses since Tony Romo went out, and 4 more weeks to go.  It's getting darker earlier in Dallas, like at 9am.

EXITING THE BASEMENT

Adios, Bro-Cha-Chos?

RRRRRRRAIDERS!!

Standing this morning at 4-3, the Oakland Raiders have gone over .500 for the first time since Quincy Jones was President.  I really can't even remember and why bother to look it up?  The Worst Team of the Decade looks like they won't be coming back this year.  It could still happen, you never know.  But two games in a row where they scored at will and didn't stop until they had over 30 points, and you think maybe this is different. They sure are having fun. We have to celebrate our miserable teams when they finally get the hell out of this pile of cheap beer and burnt coffee and duct tape and dial-up modems.  Good Luck, old friend.  You still have the best uniforms in the biz.  Which is, I guess, why you never ever change them even slightly.

2-5 Niners in the Driver's Seat

NINERS  3,  SEAHAWKS  20

The San Francisco Forty-Niners,  only two years removed from playing in the NFC Championship game, have done a remarkable turnaround:  Moved the team 50 miles from their supposed home town and alienated more than half their fan base in the process, jacked up ticket prices to the sky,  fired/let walk/couldn't keep the best coach they've had since George Seifert, seen a mass exodus of quality players from the roster, hired a coach who doesn't just look like the guy who sells me salamis at the deli in North Beach, but may in fact BE that guy, have absolutely NO offensive line of any kind, and are still owned by the biggest bonehead west of the Mississippi.

This wasn't even close.  The Hags had NO chance to lose this game.  Whiners QB Colin Kaepernick has now nailed down a 1-6 record against their biggest rival.  What kind of a rivalry is that, if you always lose?  The Doormat kind  (see Browns-Steelers).  If you can't beat your division rival, you need to re-think the guy you have running the offense.  But not the Whiners-  they're on a mission.  They're going straight to the bottom.

3 points
9 punts (one short of the NFL season high)
7 three-and-outs
8 first downs
142 total yards
6 sacks

That's some of the most efficient, and impregnable, Doormat play seen this year.  FLAME ON.

-Wacko

THURSDAY NIGHT DOORMAT

SEAHAGS (2-4) vs.  FORTY-WHINERS (2-4)

There is no doubt about it.  This is a serious Doormat Division game tonight folks.  The two teams that have hated each other for years.  The Thanksgiving game where Seahawks set up a table and started eating turkey dinner right on the Levi's Stadium turf after clocking the Niners. The huge games with the trip to the Super Bowl on the line.  Media hater Colin Scampernick vs. choirboy Russell Wilson.  Richard Sherman and anybody.

SO WHAT.  The more losses you have, the more vital the rivalry. This game's about nothing. NOTHING. How does that make you feel, fanboy?  Order extra 80-year old security personnel at Levi's Stadium.  Wear your hard hat.

Two desperate teams, one unwittingly engineering themselves into the Basement (Seattle) while the other has done it from the top down (SF), in a game that somebody just HAS to lose in order to stay in the Moldy Carpet hunt.  3-4 isn't gonna cut it.  Only 2-5 will do.

The Hags lead the league in sacks allowed, while the Whiners haven't sacked anybody since Death Cab for Cutie was the biggest name in music you don't listen to. When push comes to shove...waiting...still waiting...never mind. The Whines expected a dip in the D, after so many rats jumped ship, but instead they've been blessed with an ABYSS of ineffectiveness.

The Hags are coming off yet another impressive last second loss, while the Whiners could not keep out of the end zone (defensive backs that fall down repeatedly are hard to throw to) last week and saw the Ravens grab the loss right in front of them. Galling.

Will this be another 2015 Doormat game where both teams get to rack up 450 yards of offense, and fake the fans into thinking something is devloping?
Or will they make us think the Chiefs are in town?

It may come down to a vicious punting battle.  The Hags check in #2 in the league (32) trailing only perennial champion Buffalo (33), while the Niners have just sketchy enough punting to make you worry every time 4th down rolls around.

EDGE TO LOSE:   We have NO idea.  Whiners.  They won last week.  They're done winning for now.

Doormat Division Week Five: Flailing and Failing their way to Fame

What a weekend!  So many games right there for the taking, and Doormat teams duking it out for supremacy in the Basement!

First, the standings:

DOORMAT DIVISION STANDINGS

NFC
                  W-L         PF-PA
Kittens        0-5          83 - 138
Whiners     1-4           75 - 140
Aints          1-4           103 - 143
daBares      2-3           86 - 142
Boots         2-3           110 - 148

AFC
                  W-L           PF-PA
Gaguars     1-4             93 - 145
Toxins       1-4            97 - 135
Floppers    1-3             65 – 101
Cravens     1-4            123 - 137
Cheaps      1-4            117-143

THE GAMES

BLOWOUT OF THE WEEK

LIONS 17,  CARDINALS 42
Having a hard time getting your offense in gear?  Come to the Kat Box in Detroit- you won't need one. Six turnovers from the Kitties, most of them deep in their own territory, and the Cards just walk them into the end zone. Cards amass only 15 first downs, but who needs that when you either start your drive at the Lion's 15 or get handed a 63-yard TD run? Kitty QB Matt Stafford, saddled with an offense he doesn't understand, backing up and flinging 4 INTs, gets benched for back-up Dan Orlovsky...who played for the 0-16 Lions in 2008.  Tradition is a marvelous thing.

AINTS  17,  EAGLES  39
Eagles look like the old Oregon Ducks for one game.  Brought to you by the New Orleans Ain'ts.
Saying 'it's in the bag' has a whole 'nother meaning in NOLA.  As in, get out your bags and stick your head in them for the next home game.

SNATCHING DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY

SEAHAGS 24, BENGALS 27 (OT)
17 point blown lead. Hey, the HAGS are 2-3.  They're IN the basement, or at least hanging out by the BBQ on the patio, just outside our sliding glass door which is completely greased up with dog slobber on the bottom half. We tried to clean it a while back, but using the wax paper from under the pizzas was maybe not the best idea. The dogs liked it, though. Blowing a 17 point 4th quarter lead, the Hags deliver the biggest collapse of the 2015 season so far.  Yes, it was against possibly the best team in the AFC, but doesn't that make it all the sweeter?

49ers  27,  GIANTS 30
4 point blown lead.  The SF Chronicle headline today:  NOT A COMPLETE LOSS. Oh, my goodness, they just don't understand this game. The 49er shook things up this week, keeping it close for variety, and getting a dramatic lead with a minute left in the game...perfectly setting the stage to completely blow the game, and deflate a fan base. The Whiners kick off and march the Giants right down the field in no time at all for the touchdown and BOOM, grab the loss.  When you can lose big AND lose at the last second, you are formidable.  How do you prepare for that?

TITANS 13, BILLS 14  (STIFF OF THE WEEK)
7 point blown lead. 27 Total first downs.  13 punts.  Whew. But yet- a nail biter! A couple of Doormat regulars, Bills win it in the 4th. Remember when Titans QB Marcus Mariota won the opener and it looked like LOOK OUT NFL? Yeah, well, they just weren't looking out in the right direction. Rookie season is always a good time to shoot for winning the Doormat Division, and now he's showing some acumen with the Killer Late Interception.  Bills arrive at 3-2, but usually end up losing 10, so don't get too glum about their chances.  They were playing some stiff competition.

RAVENS 30, BROWNS 33 (OT)
12 point blown lead. A back-and-forth Doormat tilt.  This is the kind of game our Basement dwellers should deliver to their fans.  882 yards total offense! Wild, back and forth, mistake filled games with suspect defense that produce crazy plays and fabulous bumbling entertainment.  Amidst it all, the Cravens keep piling up the penalties (12/98) even if the rest of the league seems to have calmed down slightly.  They both still have losing records, but who cares?  It makes the whole tail-gate worth it.  Last time Browns won in Baltimore was 2008, by the sam 33-30 score.

CHIEFS 17, BEARS 18
14 point blown lead.  Bears still blow two 2-point conversions, but to no avail.  Cheaps out-crummy them to the bitter end.  Cheaps very good at shutting down offense in 2nd half.  Those half-time adjustments are clearly doing the job.

THE REST OF THE SORRY PILE

JAGS 31, BUCS 38
Another  wild Doormat game with swiss-cheese defense!  Total back-and-forth who can give up the big play more often kind of game.  Jags come out on top.

RAIDERS 10, BRONCOS 16
The 're-born' Raiders just hit 2-3, and welcome back, guys. It is never the same without you around.  Sea-Bass misses TWO field goals, unheard of, and Raiders QB Derek Carr throws a late interception pick six that iced it for the Broncs, throwing it in between 3 Raider receivers, two of whom weren't even looking.  Raiders defense, in all honesty, played their brains out. Antique DB Charles Woodson picked off Manning twice.   Don't forget Woodson won the Heisman over Manning.  Think they don't still remember that?

REDSKINS 19, FALCONS 25 (OT)
Redskins really keep playing with fire every week.  One of these days, they're going to win again.

NOTE:  There is a surprising drop in punting this year.

NFL WEEK 5 WORST STATS

PENALTIES:     12/98    BALTIMORE
TURNOVERS:   6  (4/2)  DETROIT  (INT/FUM)

DOORMAT DIVISION WEEK 4 WRAP UP!!!!

DOORMAT DIVISION WEEK FOUR WRAP-UP

There is only ONE un-victorious team left, the illustrious Detroit Kittens, and tonight they have a chance to separate themselves from the rest of the NFL and reach 0-4.  They’re at Seattle, so things look good.  The Seahags haven’t been perfect, but the Lions have, so we’ll go with the Kitties pulling down an L and making it a thing of beauty.

And, in case you hadn’t noticed, it’s the Year of the Penalty.  Buffalo logged in yesterday with 17 for 135 yards the Jets with 14 for 163, though those were Imperial Yards.   That’s an insane amount of yardage and penalties.   The Jets won.

DOORMAT DIVISION STANDINGS

NFC
                  W-L         PF-PA
Kittens        0-3          56 – 83
Whiners     1-3           48 - 110
daBares     1-3           68 - 125
Boots         1-3           72 – 117
Aints          1-3           86 – 104

AFC
                  W-L           PF-PA
Gaguars     1-3             62 – 107
Floppers    1-3             65 – 101
Brownies   1-3             85 -102
Cravens     1-3             93 - 104
Cheaps      1-3            100 -125

WEEK 4  WRAP UP

BLOW OUT OF THE WEEK

Texans 21, Falcons 48
It was 42-0 before the Falcons started choosing fans from the stands to play D.   The Toxins are rounding into shape, folks.  4 Turnovers, two returned for touchdowns.  Wow.

THE WILD FINISH

Jags 13, Colts 16 (OT)
There were a lot of close ones this week, teams pulling out last second losses in dire situations that could have ended in a demoralizing victory, but the Jags have no competition:  with the game tied with 6 seconds to go, placekicker Jason Myers sails one right- but WAIT the Colts called time out.  The Jags line up again and…Myers sails it again!  Overtime!  Then, the Jags got close enough for Myers to…hook one to the left.  Finally, out of options, the Colts kick a field goal themselves and just take the dingdong win.  Gags move into first place in the Doormat AFC.

Browns 27,  Chargers 30
The Chargers were game.  The Brownies actually scored points. But they pulled it off- a last second FG by the Blots keeps the Blank Helmet Dream moving.  Cleveland, you disappoint like nobody else.  And we love you for it.

DOORMAT EXHIBITION IN LONDON

Dolphins 14, Jets 27
I was worried when the Jags were not being sent back to represent the Doormat in London this year, but never fear, Florida has a surplus of talent in the Basement, and the Floppers delivered.  Pip pip!  Cheerio!  For he’s a jolly good punter!  Sadly, the Flops fired coach Philbin before he could even finish his fish and chips at Heathrow.  That’s no way to run a Doormat franchise..unless you are going to promote the guy all the players like on the coaching staff to run the team.  We’ll see.

DEATH MARCH SEASON

49ers 3,  Packers 17
After getting shelled two weeks in a row, this score at least looks close.  Don’t be fooled.  Though the 49er D played real football, the 49er offense is so bad that…they may not win another game.  I watched this one, and I don’t see how they will. The O-line can’t run block, can’t pass block, QB Kaepernick appears to have lost all his confidence, sailing balls out of bounds and scudding passes over the middle (‘scudding’ is bouncing the pass), visibly frustrated receivers, it’s all there.  48 points after 4 games is WAY OUT IN THE LEAD for lowest point total.   Not even Jacksonville can touch that, and that’s really really saying something.
Also, Levi stadium really has a problem- there is nobody in the 50-yard line seats.  They call it the Red Hole (how charming), and it really looks weird when the cameras scan the seats.  It’s like a Division II college game being played there.  Oh, wait, I think I got it.

THE REST OF THE SORRY PILE

Raiders 20,  Bears 23
Coming into Chicago, riding a two game winning streak, the Raiders aren’t going to give up their Doormat Team of the Decade status easily.  They aren’t going to just hand it to daBares.  And they didn’t.  Kicking a FG with two seconds to go, daBears are forced to take the win, at home, when they could have effectively ended their season, and gone on a losing streak for the ages.  Tough luck, newbie.

Bucs 23,  Panthers 37
Boots QB Jameis Winston gets it really going for TB with FOUR INTs – one a pick-six.
Bucs toss in a fumble return for a Panther TD, and these guys look solid.  Only problem is their division has the Aints.  Says here the Aints win both of those.  Unless they already lost to them.  What do I know, I live in the basement with a broom closet for company.

Eagles  20,  Redskins 23
The wheels are coming off.  There is no spare.

Chiefs 21,  Bengals 36
7 Field goals by the Cheaps.  Good GOD.

THE WORST STATS FOR WEEK  4

Points:           3     49ers
First Downs:  8           49ers
Total Yards:  196         49ers
Passing:     96              Steelers
Rushing:   54               Texans
Red Zone Failure:        0-whatever   Chiefs
Turnovers:  5               Bucs
Raspberry Turnovers (for TDs): 2      Bucs,  2  Texans
Punts:  8                      NYG

Penalties:  14/163        Jets   (9 teams had more than 80 yards in penalties. I have never seen that)
